Clichy

Balancing grounding and reinterpretation, this transformation reveals an interior that is both structured and fluid, raw and sophisticated, warm and minimalist—where every detail contributes to a contemporary reading of the original architecture.

This rehabilitation project merges two 1930s apartments into a single, unified space, where the architectural intervention engages in a dialogue with the existing structure to highlight the uniqueness of the place. Rather than erasing traces of the past, each design choice enhances the presence of original elements by setting them against contemporary materials.

The opening between the former units becomes a defining feature, marked by a monumental built-in bookcase made of polished concrete in warm tones. More than a simple passageway, this mineral arch redefines circulation and serves as a central pivot for the living areas. Its raw character contrasts with the refined, restored period moldings, creating a subtle tension between heritage and modernity.

The entire project plays on contrasts and resonances: the warmth of the polished concrete against the classic elegance of original woodwork, the reflections from large mirrors that amplify the southern light and echo the existing ornamentation, and the softness of varnished textures blending with the mineral surfaces.

The bathroom pays homage to the 1930s with delicate geometric patterns, a varnished wood vanity, and brushed brass fixtures—creating a stylistic continuity that feels respectful rather than nostalgic.
